下面我们先来看几个在托福阅读中出现的句子:
1. Possibly these objects merely block light behind them, but it is also possible that turtles are sensitive to the shape of suchobjects and process these shapes as signals that the sea is located in someother direction.
2. And finally, because what they eat is oftenbioluminescent, many of the transparent deep-sea creatures have red or blackstomachs to hide the potentially flashing contents of ingested bioluminescentcreatures.
3. Since the pioneering work of W. H. Thorpe onchaffinches (a common European bird), many species have been studied, and ithas become clear both that learning plays an important role for all species andalso that there are constraints on what they are able to learn.

首先,我们要学会“切割”长难句,然后再逐个击破。
而我们“切割点”就是连词(连接句子的连词)(不认识什么词是连词的同靴自行去蹲墙角吧。)所以第1个句子就可以切割为以下四个分句:
分句1: Possiblythese objects merely block light behind them
分句2: but it isalso possible
分句3:that turtles are sensitive to the shape of suchobjects and process these shapes as signals
分句4:that the sea is located in some other direction.
接下来,小伙伴肯定会问了,我能切割也能理解各个分句,可是我怎么把它们放在一起理解呢?
所以就到了我们的第二个妙招,判断各个分句之间的关系。具体技巧就是,有连词的句子是从句,不带连词的句子是主句,从句为主句服务,具体扮演什么角色取决于它的位置。
以上面的4个分句为例,很容易判断出分句1和2是主句,其他2个是从句。
分句2和分句1之间的连词是but,所以是转折关系,而分句2和分句3其实是一个完整的句子,只要你熟悉it 做形式主语,真正的主语是that引导的句子,也就是it is …that 句式。
而分句4的that从句出现在分句3的名词signal后面,就是我们Z熟悉的定语从句啦。
